Legal loads: a perennial issue in trucking
Truck loads are considered “legal” in a given province if the gross load, axle load, axle configuration, length and width fall within current laws for weight and size. Most commercial trucks operate at or below the GVW limits. Why? They max out on available space before they reach their weight limits.

Lift Axles Offer Practical Solutions
- A lift axle is a non-fixed axle located on a tractor, semi-trailer or trailer that can be lifted from contact with the road.
- A lift axle gives extra support when a truck is carrying a load that is heavier than originally intended during vehicle configuration.
Advantages of Installing Lift Axles
- Significantly higher payload capability
- Cost savings on fuel and tire wear as lift axles can be raised for lighter loads/empty trucks
- In trucks with multiple axles, improved ability to corner and turn

Lift axles and suspensions are available in “pusher” or “tag” configurations, steerable or non-steerable capacities from 10,000 lbs to 22,000 lbs.
Dump trucks preceding a tandem axle commonly use a lift axle. In concrete mixers, two lift axles are seen, with one lift following the steering axle and the other lift at the extreme rear of the vehicle.
