Vehicles can vary significantly in their preventative maintenance (PM) schedule. Although your owner’s manual recommends a PM specific to your model, also gauge your maintenance frequency by the type, age, and purpose of your vehicle and how you drive:

Type of vehicle: Do you drive a passenger car? An RV that’s built like a fancy house? A heavy-duty truck? Each has its own set of instructions.

Age of vehicle: Newer vehicle makes and models can often go for longer intervals between oil changes. Find out yours.

Purpose of vehicle: Do you use your vehicle for business daily for hundreds of kilometers? Do you infrequently use your vehicle (think RV) for vacations? Something in between?

Rate your driving behaviors: Do you drive too fast for conditions? Cut in and out of traffic? Brake hard? Drive into curbs? Gun the engine? Ease up; your vehicle will be grateful.

Other factors that warrant more frequent oil changes:

Short trips and local driving
Stop-and-go driving
Extremely cold/hot weather
Road conditions (are roads wet, snow-covered or icy)?
Air quality (are roads under construction?)
Towing (do you pull a trailer, camper, or other vehicle?)
Sustained high-speed driving
Significant number of miles routinely driven

Stop-And-Go Driving Vs. Highway Driving

If your vehicle is driven stop and go, your transmission gets stressed from upshifting and downshifting. Also, your brakes, tires and suspension parts will be prone to more wear and tear. And, if your vehicle rarely warms up all the way before you shut it off, your oil will almost certainly get contaminated.
Highway driving is easier mileage. Your transmission shifts less. Your brake use is less. Your suspension and tires are stressed less, especially when driving on straight roads in good repair. And the potential for contaminating your oil is low since you burn off the contaminants.
