Coil Springs: Are They Right For You?

Coil springs, which resemble helixes, use compression around a “coil” to cushion your ride and reduce jouncing of your vehicle. If you want precise shock absorption, coil springs may be for you. A comfortable ride can be precisely tuned with coils.

Occasionally a spring will break (whether coil, leaf, or torsion). Springs on passenger cars can sag over the years; the sag may or may not be enough to cause concern. The degree of sag becomes a matter of how heavily you load your vehicle, how often you load it, where you drive your vehicle, and how you drive it. Generally, passenger cars spend most of their lives riding around relatively unloaded.

Trucks and buses are a different matter. Springs on passenger cars tend to last the life of the vehicle (but not always). Springs on trucks and buses carrying heavy loads frequently are replaced more often.

If you frequently load your pickup to the hilt and drive it off road, you can expect a fair amount of sag. And, don’t forget, bouncing around on worn-out struts/shocks can shorten spring life, too, and can turn your pickup into a sagging old heap and a bouncing carnival ride. Better to replace those worn parts before they weaken further.

A coil spring suspension offers the main advantage of a wider range of movement. Each tire can sit at a different height. Your chances of “bottoming out” are less likely since your axles are flexible.

Coil springs feature more parts that can wear when compared to leaf springs. However, for professional tuners and car enthusiasts, the flexibility of coil springs is hard to beat and far outweighs the costs of replacing parts.

Coil spring systems are also more expensive to install than most of the usual leaf spring systems, but, again, for the serious off-roader, car enthusiast, or professional tuner, the performance of coil springs is truly a force to be reckoned with.
